How to use the noke smart lock with a phone

Short explanation

  1. Check whether your phone is compatible: iPhone 4S or newer, Samsung Galaxy S4 or newer, HTC One or newer, any other Android devices that have Bluetooth 4.0 hardware and are running the Jelly Bean (4.3) or Kit Kat (4.4) versions of the Android operating system.
  2. Download the “Noke” app from the App Store or Google Play.
  3. Set up a Noke account.
  4. Send an email to peter@cycle.land that you have set up a Noke account, please include the username and email address you have used for the Noke account in the email, so that you can get set up to open the Noke smart locks. You will receive a confirmation email as soon as your phone is set up to open the Noke smart locks.
  5. Each time before opening the padlock, make sure that (i) your phone is turned on, (ii) the Noke app is running and (iii) Bluetooth is turned on.
  6. Go to your bike and press once on the shackle of the Noke smart lock. Wait until you see a green light over the “e” on the padlock and hear a “click” from the padlock. This will typically take less than 5 seconds on an iPhone but can take longer on some Android phones, because of the way Bluetooth is set up on these phones. Pull out the shackle from the padlock. The lock is open.

Detailed explanation

  1. Unfortunately, not all phones are compatible with the padlock. The following phones are compatible: iPhone 4S or newer, Samsung Galaxy S4 or newer, HTC One or newer, any other Android devices that have Bluetooth 4.0 hardware and are running the Jelly Bean (4.3) or Kit Kat (4.4) versions of the Android operating system. The Bluetooth on some of the Android phones is set up in a way that it can take a long time for the Bluetooth signal to open the padlock. Please check. If it takes too long, please instead use the fob instead of the phone.
  2. Download the “Noke” app from the App Store or Google Play.
  3. Set up a Noke account.
  4. Send an email to peter@cycle.land that you have set up a Noke account, please include the username and email address you have used for the Noke account in the email, so that you can get set up to open the Noke padlocks. You will receive a confirmation email as soon as your phone is set up to open the smart locks.
  5. Each time before opening the padlock, make sure that (i) your phone is turned on, (ii) the Noke app is running and (iii) Bluetooth is turned on.
  6. Go to your bike and - looking at the side of the padlock where you can see “noke” - briefly press down the shackle once. You will see a blue light above the “e” on the padlock light up briefly, which means you have pressed the shackle. The padlock is now searching for a Bluetooth signal to open it - and after a few seconds the light above the “e” will flash green and you will hear a “click” sound indicating that now the padlock is ready to be opened. This will typically take less than 5 seconds on an iPhone but can take longer on some Android phones, because of the way Bluetooth is set up on these phones. Pull out the shackle from the padlock. The lock is open.

Trouble shooting

These are the typical problems if you cannot open the Noke smart lock

  1. Check wether your phone is on!
  2. Check wether your Bluetooth is on!
  3. Check wether the Noke app is running!
  4. Check wether you have received the confirmation email that your phone is set up to open the smart locks!
  5. Check that you are not closing the lock, when it is open. Just try the opening process again, slowly! You may have a phone that takes a bit longer to open the padlock - give it some time.
  6. Check that there are no other users around that can open the padlock. The padlock gets confused and does not open when it detects more than one Bluetooth device with the permission to open it. When you are trying to open the padlock and you are with colleagues, then ask them to turn off the bluetooth on their phone, turn off the Noke app or turn off their phone. Then try the opening process again.
  7. The Bluetooth in your phone might have a limited range. Try opening the padlock again when holding the fob close to the padlock.
  8. The padlock may be out of battery. Check this by pressing the shackle while looking at the side which reads “noke”. If the light over the “e” does not go on, when you press the shackle then the battery is empty. You will need to “jump start” the lock with another battery. Best to text to: 07947797478
