LMH CYCLE.LAND POOL BIKES Project

Background

The LMH CYCLE.LAND POOL BIKE project, supported by Oxford University Estates Services, aims to comprehensively improve the cycling experience for students and staff at LMH. Please click here to check out how it works.

The core of the project is smart lock based bike sharing which will be further enhanced by additional general support to positively impact the users’ cycling experience in Oxford.

Cycle.land, supported by University of Oxford Innovation, has launched a social marketplace for bike sharing in Oxford (www.cycle.land). Our aim is to create a tight knit community of bike sharers and optimise the quality and quantity of cycling in Oxford. We are keen to assist LMH with designing, promoting and operating LMH staff and student bike sharing. Our aim is to eventually connect the LMH bike sharing with the University of Oxford Estates Services bike sharing, other Colleges’ bike sharing, Oxford Brookes University bike sharing and non-university bike sharing.

We are working with the University of Oxford Estates Services on a parallel project to assess the feasibility of using smart lock-based bike sharing of University staff pool bikes to improve the cycling experience of Oxford University staff.

Stage 1 - Started on 9 June 2016

LMH students and staff can use 5 regularly maintained pool bikes free of charge via an online booking system. Bikes can be booked at any time on weekdays. On weekends, the bikes are made available to tourists/visitors, so that the bikes can generate revenues in support of the LMH CYCLE.LAND POOL BIKE project.

In the beginning, we are using normal combination locks. These will be replaced by smart locks that can be opened with smart phones via Bluetooth once the viability of this has been tested in the University of Oxford Estates Services project.

Stage 2 - Last week of 2016 Trinity Term (June 13 - June 18)

We encourage any students leaving LMH at the end of Trinity 2016 to write to hello@cycle.land to leave their bikes for inclusion in the LMH CYCLE.LAND POOL BIKE project. Bikes are assessed for safety and - where necessary - brought up to scratch. Any bikes that cannot be used in the LMH CYCLE.LAND POOL BIKE project will be donated to the Broken Spoke Bike Co-op.

We also encourage LMH students leaving for the summer break to write to hello@cycle.land to leave their bikes for inclusion in the LMH CYCLE.LAND POOL BIKE project just for the summer. Bikes are assessed for safety and - where necessary - brought up to scratch. These bikes will be made available for summer visitors and tourists and the revenues generated by this will be shared between the participating students and the LMH CYCLE.LAND POOL BIKE project.

Stage 3 - Summer break 2016

During the summer break 2016 the LMH CYCLE.LAND POOL BIKES will be made available to tourists/visitors, so that the bikes can generate revenues in support of the LMH CYCLE.LAND POOL BIKE project.
